HOW TO OVERCOME DISTRACTIONS

Luke 10:41-42 KJV

[41] And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: [42] But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Too many things compete for our attention. We have to put things in the right perspective to enable us know our order of priority. They all look important but looking closely, some are more important than others. Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 10:23 KJV

[23] All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

Martha chose to be occupied with serving when Jesus was around and Mary chose to listen to Jesus. They will not always have Jesus with them and the cooking or serving can be done later. Martha was busy doing the wrong thing. Distractions make us do unnecessary things and maybe necessary things at the wrong time.

The following will help you to know how to overcome distraction;

IDENTIFY WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE

It is not everything that you do that is geared towards achieving your goal. It is not every route that leads to your destination. State clearly what you want to achieve. When you do this, it will be easy to know what to accommodate to achieve your goal and what to do away with. It’s imperative to get rid of anything that is physically stealing your focus. Don’t equate being busy with being productive.

IDENTIFY WHAT DISTRACTS YOU

You can’t fix a problem you can’t identify. What you don’t identify, you can’t confront. What you don’t confront, can’t conquer. Write down what you want to achieve. Take note of what hinders you from achieving your set goals. Using your phone as Bible in church can cause distraction when notifications pops up.

Can you identify a few distractions in your life, whether they are obvious or subtle?

DEAL WITH DISTRACTIONS WITHIN YOUR CAPACITY

You have to be intentional about

getting rid of things that distract you. It may take a while to master it but consistency in doing away with what you consider distractions, will help you overcome.

If your goal is to lose weight, you need to do away with junk food and start exercising!

If you’re distracted by the TV unplug it.

Turn your cell phone completely off when you have something important to do. Or at least turn it off or put it away while you are working at your goal.

If certain association make you do the wrong things, avoid them. You need people to do the right things, and you need people to do the wrong things.

If going to some places encourage bad habits, stop visiting such places. The choice is always yours.

Shalom
